On Saturday, September 15, a group of Federal Terrace Elementary School students kicked off their weekend by participating in the California Coastal Cleanup Day.
During the cleanup, a group of about 25 students, parents, and staff members walked two blocks from the school to the bike path on Sacramento Street to participate in the annual Coastal Cleanup Day.
Organized by the California Coastal Commission, Coastal Cleanup Day is the state’s largest volunteer event, with about 70,000 volunteers picking up trash on California’s beaches, rivers, lakes, and other waterways.
There were 16 sites throughout Vallejo being cleaned-up by volunteers like those from Federal Terrace.
According to 4th grade teacher Marie Muscolino–Henton, this was the schools first year participating in the event and the group picked up dozens of bags of trash along the bike path and the shoreline. They also picked up everything from bottle caps and chip bags, to shoes, to golf balls, and even a dog toy and a barbecue grill!
“Everyone had so much fun working together to keep the community healthy and clean, they are already looking forward to next year’s Coastal Cleanup Day,” said Muscolino-Henton
