Cadet Ensign Orson Reyes, a senior at Jesse Bethel High School and Executive Officer of its Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit, was offered an appointment and full scholarship to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, N.Y. The scholarship included full tuition, housing, meals, books, uniforms, healthcare, transportation to and from the Academy, and a monthly stipend while at sea. Of the four years at the Academy, one year is spent at sea on various ships. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is one of the five federal U.S. military academies and has a worldwide reputation as a premier logistics and engineering school. Upon graduation, Mr. Reyes would be commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and licensed as a Third Assistant Marine Engineer in the U.S. Merchant Marine. The full value of the scholarship offered is about $250,000.
