Steffan Manor is proud to present Devynne Johnson as Teacher of the Year for the Vallejo City Unified School District. We are very fortunate to have such an outstanding teacher working at our school. Ms. Johnson has been a teacher at Steffan Manor for three years, and as the Principal, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with her for two of these years. It has been an absolute joy to watch her teach! It came to my attention last year that there was something special happening in Room 27. Each time I visited the room, I noticed that the students seemed to be having so much fun, in addition to that, I noticed the passion for teaching which Ms. Johnson displayed when engaging her students. I remember asking one student at the time, “Is Ms. Johnson this fun and passionate every day?” Without hesitation, the student responded, “Ms. Johnson is like this every day!” At that point, I realized that Ms. Johnson had something special; it was her ability to engage all students no matter their background. Being able to engage ALL students takes a very special gift and Ms. Johnson has that gift.
Devynne is one of the most dedicated teachers I know. She comes to work every day with a positive attitude and is prepared to engage her students in hands-on learning activities. She stays on top of current research in instructional strategies through reading, conferences and professional development opportunities. Her focus is always on student success and she shows exemplary use of differentiation strategies to reach all of her students. She clearly cares about their academics, but also their well being. This is evident in her culturally responsive teaching practices. She works hard to make connections with students and families to support their needs in any capacity that she can. If she doesn’t know how to handle situations, she collaborates with her peers to help her find solutions.
One more thing I want to share about Devynne that is inspiring to all of us, is her consistent positivity! Although she faces days which may be difficult, and she may feel defeated, her attitude is always that tomorrow is another day, and it will be amazing! She always has a smile on her face and goes with the flow. That positivity rubs off on her students, peers and leaders. She truly deserves to be Teacher of the Year!
